Study Tip - Week 1

You can improve your transcription ability by devoting more time to writing. Keep a journal. Record your thoughts freely as they come to you, but write them out in complete sentences, supplying punctuation as you go. Write a paragraph or two every day. Once a week, go over your journal entries and examine your grammar, syntax, and punctuation. If you have questions about particular constructions, ask your instructor or someone else for feedback. Over time, your compositions will improve and so will your ability to transcribe.

Answers to Quiz - Week 1

There are multiple acceptable edits for each sentence. Here are our choices:

1.  While the child was wearing diapers, his mother remarried. (The mother was not wearing diapers.)

2.  After accomplishing the removal of his appendix, I sent the patient to the recovery room. (The patient did not remove his own appendix, hopefully.)

3.  Incising the wound, I found the area of necrosis seemed larger than expected. (The incision was made by the physician and not by the necrotic area.)

4.  Although extremely destructive, this disease has been demonstrated to be controllable. (The researchers are not destructive--depending upon one’s opinion of their funding source.)

5.  The patient suddenly went into cardiac arrest as he was about to be taken to surgery by Dr. Franklin. (Ostensibly, the patient went into cardiac arrest, not the doctor; the remainder of the report would bear this out.)

6.  Dr. Anderson, who was seeing this patient before admission, will resume his care after he is discharged. (Who is who; who is he?)

7.  After studying his urine, we found a large number of white cells to be present. (The white cells weren’t doing the studying.)

8.  While he was still very young, both of his parents had died. (If his parents died when they were very young, he must have been adopted.)

9.  When he had earned the nickname 'Old Forgetful,' the Alzheimer patient was admitted by Dr. Smith.  (If Dr. Smith has earned this nickname, this patient has more problems than he realizes.)

10.  Although very weak, Mr. Bean’s illness did not stop him from pursuing his hobbies. (Unfortunately, Mr. Bean’s illness is not weak; he is.)
